The Grand Prairie Arts Initiative Phase Two was designed and inspired from the original initiative to continue to offer after school classes, summer art camps, and expand the programs to include weekend classes for adults and senior citizens, Touring Art Camp Programs, and The Delta Blues Traveling Concert Series. This initiative will operate year round serving both adult and student populations from Kindergarten to senior citizens in Stuttgart and the Delta including Mississippi and Louisiana as well as Arkansas. The success of the original initiative showed the overwhelming need within the community for programs as well as expanding services. Our faculty develops curriculum that is art based, but focuses on utilizing mathematics, reading, communication and social skills directly with the student’s. The program will give students the opportunity to work in various art mediums focused on improved reading, math, and social skills after school, on the weekend and during the summer. The goal is to improve the student’s attitude of learning. During the school year after – school classes for students in grades 3rd thru 8th grade will meet for two six week sessions every semester. In order to provide focused small group instruction class size will not exceed 12 students.
In the summer the program provides four weeks of art camp in Stuttgart that’s goal is to reach a targeted population of students that without this opportunity would have no artistic and social outlet over the summer. Each week long camp is open to K thru 5th and a separate camp for 6th through 8th grade is provided. These camps provide a safe nurturing environment during the summer and engage students to reinforce skills previously learned to stay connected.
The initiative will also take the camp faculty and resources to a community within the Delta and provide summer art programming for youth free of charge using the same program model as developed for Stuttgart. The Art Center will coordinate with local educational and civic leaders to insure success and offer those communities the opportunity to host a summer camp and target the similar population.
Weekend programming that includes creating a cross generational social experience using art as the connection for senior citizens and high school students will be presented as well as classes specifically for adults of all ages and abilities.
“The Crossroads Blues Concert Series” will showcase the rich history of the Southern Delta Blues for students thru educational concerts that will explore the musicians that have made this rich history in American music. The Art Center of the Grand Prairie has produced successful concert series over the last ten plus years that have focused on providing educational programming that both entertain audiences but also encourages students to participate in the arts thru music, and promote the many benefits that a musical education can provide and offer.
